Oltu [Arm: Olti] is a large garrison fortress which was constructed, enlarged, and repaired by Armenians and Georgians between the 4th and 15th c.  There were prolonged periods of Byzantine and Seljuk occupation.  The foundation of an impressive hexaconch church stands atop the northeast tower.  This site guarded an important road between Erzurum and Kars.
