Ardanuç
[Lat: Adranutzim; Grk: Ardanoutzi; Georg: Artanuĵi; Arm: Artanuš
or Artanuj] is a large garrison
fortress and church, primarily of Armenian and Georgian construction (5th –
11th c), located on a lofty outcrop above a river with the same name. Below at the northeast are the remains of the
civilian settlement which was occupied from the late antique period. In the 19th c. the population was still
predominantly Armenian. Along with
Ferhatlı this site guarded the road from Artvin to Ardahan.
