Şebinkarahisar / Koloneia [Lat: Colonia; Grk: Kolōneia or Kolōnia; Arm: Kołoniay] consists of the late antique / medieval settlement and the nearby massive outcrop.  The latter has a fortress with approximately 2.5 km of circuit walls and a citadel with a donjon.  The fortress is primarily of late antique, Byzantine, and Armenian construction, with the Seljuks credited for extensive repairs.  The Ottomans are responsible for restorations and the construction of the donjon.  At least one badly damaged Greek church survives in the city; the two Armenian churches have been destroyed.
