[Georg: Artʽvini, Arthuvani or Arthwan(i); Arm: Artʽvin] is a large garrison fortress,
primarily of Georgian construction, with prolonged intervals of Byzantine and
Armenian occupation (5th – 13th c).
During the Ottoman period the civilian population in the adjoining town
was Armenian. This site guarded the
strategic highway from Erzurum to Batum in Georgia.
