Çem is a large garrison fortress with a late antique / Byzantine foundation, two baileys, and extensive Armenian reconstruction, including a chapel.  Below and to the east of the fortress is a large late antique / medieval town with a preserved church.  This site guarded the strategic road from Göksun and Cappadocia to Cilicia Pedias.
