Sumela / Meryemana Manastır is the Byzantine
Monastery of the Theotokos (4th – 15th c.).
This site is located 54 km south of Trabzon and contains the Rock
Church, seven chapels, a dormitory, and library. The photographs herein show the monastery
prior to the controversial Turkish renovations.
