Ardasa / Torul is a large Byzantine garrison
fortress with a possible late Roman foundation.
The lower bailey is severely damaged, but the upper bailey has two
levels with well-preserved walls and embrasured loopholes. This site protected the strategic highway
linking Trabzon and Tirebolu to Erzincan.
