Gümüşhane / Canca [Grk: Tzanicha] is a large garrison fortress with three baileys set on a
longitudinal axis and with two Byzantine chapels, which have traces of painted
plaster. Below one chapel is a
cistern. This site guarded a strategic
highway linking Trabzon to Bayburt and Erzincan.
